Although, ADT is the leader in the security system industry, let's face it, not everyone is in the market of investing in an ADT home security system. However, in any case you want to be as protected as possible. Therefore, I have come up with a few ways on how to protect your unarmed home.
10 Ways to Secure your Unarmed Home
- Add a security door! It's a great way to leave the door open when the weather is nice outside. But even better, you can speak with visitors from behind the security door and not have to invite them in. Everyone can use an extra layer of security.
- Keep the porch light light on at night. I can't stress this enough... So what if you have to replace the bulb a couple times a year? It will help! I have my porch light on every night, as a matter of fact it's so bright that when the street lamp was out, it was my outdoor light that provided visibility to folks on the sidewalk. The instant that darkness falls, please turn that light on or at least have a motion sensor. This will prevent someone from trying to fidget with your front door or breaking in through a window because I doubt an intruder wants to be seen by the neighborhood that they're trying to get in.
- Ok, now for those who still don't want to invest in a security door, at least drill a peephole, so that you can see who is at your front door before you open it wide enough for the world to see.
- Change the locks! I know that throughout the years that we spend in our home, we end up giving a key to the baby-sitter, family and friends, trusted neighbors, pet-sitters and the list can go on and on. However, we seldomly think what can be the outcome of that. You may not know who or how many people have access to your house. So please change your door locks every few years or get a keyless door lock. Nowadays, there are really advanced deadbolt locks that you can operate from a smartphone or set a passcode on the keypad, that way the code can be changed instead of the entire lock.
- It's obvious that our pets mean a lot to us and so should their doors. There are more secure and safer doggy doors than the average old-fashioned one that could possibly fit a desperate teenager, who wants your prized possessions bad enough. For a quick fix, install a wireless sensor so at least you can be alerted when it opens. However, in the long run really rethink your pet door for even better protection.
- Warning signs are a great way to intimidate an intruder. For example, "Beware of Pitbull" "Beware of Rottweiler" are some great signs to display on your front gate.
- Upkeep your landscaping! Don't make life easy for a burglar by giving him places to hide. Trim trees and bushes, especially ones that are blocking windows or any entryway, leaving them visible from the street.
- And while we're on the landscaping topic, keep your yard equipment stored away. It may be hard to see the value in them but they WILL catch the eye of a thief. Also, if they get away with your yard equipment, chances are they may be back for more. Or, on the other hand a thief may use such equipment to break in. Please don't create any irony here by allowing someone to use your own equipment to break into your own house.
- Next, if you currently have single pane windows, really look into getting double pane windows that are not only more energy efficient but safer as well. They are harder to break into because they have two layers of glass versus just one and the locks on new windows are often more secure.
- Last but certainly not least, protect YOURSELF by cutting a mail slot into your front door. Homeowners who have outdoor mailboxes are most likely to experience stolen checks, stolen credit card numbers and even identity.
As you can see from the above list of things, there are many ways to improve your home security. Even the smallest simplest things can put you a step ahead of the intruder. However, for even more peace of mind, you can look into an ADT Home Security System and you might find that it really can be affordable... But who can really put a price tag on protection?
